Gary O’Brien, the owner of My Tax Refund, is seeking an injunction to allow his firm to buy advertising on the platform, on which he had already spent €350,000. The ad ban relates to a change in Google’s policy in 2020, which banned ads from companies offering services that can be obtained directly from the state.

The legal team for O’Brien were in the High Court last week seeking an injunction directing Google to allow My Tax Refund to advertise the services it provides with Google Ads. Barrister Arthur Cunningham, instructed by Peter Boyle and Co Solicitors, told the court that if the injunction was unsuccessful, it was “very unlikely” that the company would be able to trade “beyond the summer”.
